On Friday, Sept. 12 the Lee Davis Confederates traveled to James River to take on the Rapids. On the first Confederate drive, two pass plays set up a Philip Gardener to Matt Marlowe touchdown pass and a missed PAT, Lee-Davis was up 6-0. The first Rapid drive was stopped quickly by an interception by defensive back Chad Muller, setting the Confederates up in scoring position. The Rapid defense held the Confederates in check, holding them to a 22-yard field goal by kicker C.J. Stevens. James River’s first scoring drive was set up by a 52 yard run by Cole Ransom, which led to great field position and a short touchdown run. The momentum however changed rapidly in the Confederates favor. Will Burton connected with T.J. Harvey on a 60 yd touchdown near the end of the first quarter, and after a two point conversion, the score was 17-7 Lee-Davis. The middle quarters were much slower offensively than the first, but the slow offense was due to the stout defense by both teams. There were three James River turnovers, and two Lee-Davis turnovers, but neither led to any scores. The score was 17-7 Lee-Davis until the first play of the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter began with a 17 yard touchdown pass to receiver T.J. Harvey, and a 2 point conversion by Brandon Angus. This scoring drive was set up by an interception in the red zone by cornerback Kendall Metz. James River wouldn’t go away as they put up two quick scores within five minutes, and all big plays were on the ground, two of them for touchdowns. With 17 seconds left in the game the Rapids were down five points, a Ransom 76-yard pass to Brown put the Rapids in the red zone. After a Rapids penalty with 12 seconds left, James River lined up for what was the final play of the game. Ransom was hit as he threw and the ball was intercepted by Jonathan Alexander, and returned 96 yards for a touchdown. This was first victory of the young Confederate season; LD-31, JR-20. |
